A History of Barbados

December 11, 2009

Barbados is becoming more and more popular with tourists every year, more people are making their way to the island every year, some looking for rest and relaxation and others looking for fun activities. This is a short summary of Barbados’ history.

Barbados first took shape as we know it today back in the 1620s and 30s, the British landed for the first time on the island at the site of what we now know as Holetown. The British enjoyed uncontested rule of the island until 1966 when Barbados was granted independence.

In the mid 1600′s Barbados was home to one of the worlds biggest sugar industries. Tobacco was previously the main export of Barbados, but as the sugar industry grew, tobacco was soon replaced. Barbados was soon divided into large plantations. Slaves where used to serve on the plantations until the Slave trade was abolished in 1807. However slaves where still made to work until 1834, when the slavery was abolished in the British empire.

Independence was negotiated in 1966 and granted on November 30th 1966. Since gaining independent status Barbados has maintained close ties with the British, establishing membership of the Commonwealth of Nations and soon with the United Nations.

Recently Barbados has become an ever growing tourist stop with much of the islands history and tradition is retained. The Island has become known around the world for some of the worlds best surfing beaches.
